Sing With A King  Policies

Voice Lessons is the opportunity to enhance a student's musical capabilities through voice, which consists of implementing technical skills with natural capabilities, but require openness to inner and self growth, allowing a student to be vulnerable to progress towards their potential and discovering their  individual voice, by trusting the personalized process created for them. It is a weekly commitment that should be taken seriously, by ensuring that each student, can attend each lesson. The student's progress depends on them and the effort they put in. There may be difficult challenges in learning something new, but each student has a teacher at Sing With A King, who is committed to being there, to guide them to the other side of discovering the fun and the beauty of their own musical journey.

Lessons

Sing With A King is broken into 3 groups: Little Royals, Junior Royals, & Senior Court. The lesson length depends on your group.

  • Little Royals are students who are 10 years old or younger. They will receive 30 minute lessons. Little Royals are not necessarily beginners. Depending on how long they have had lessons with me, they can be considered as Beginning or Emerging Intermediate Level of Vocal and Musical Skill

  • Junior Royals are students who are 11 years old and older. They have the options of having 45 minute lessons or 1 hour lessons, if they have had more than a year of voice lessons with me. The skill level of Junior Royals are also, not necessarily Intermediate Level of Vocal and Musical Skill. It also depends on how long they have been having voice lessons and how their skills have improved over time.

  • Senior Court are students who are 11 years and older, who have had voice lessons with me for more than 5  years and are advanced in their level of Vocal and Musical Skill in demonstrating how their skills have improved over time.  Students who are older, but have demonstrate their advanced skill level through proficient music theory knowledge, clear understanding and application of vocal technique, have auditioned and sung solos for an audience, with high performance capabilities are also considered Senior Court, if they have had voice lessons elsewhere.

Online Lessons are on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.

(Online consultations are also done on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.)

Online Lessons will be done through Teams. (Students) can access it  through their Teams log in. When it comes to online lessons, your child should treat it as a regular lesson, as if I am meeting with them in person. They should be prepared with the following:

  • The device that they use for Teams should be charged at 100% or connected to a charging station

  • They should have their lessons in a quiet spot of their house where they won't be disturbed and there are no distracting background noises

  • They should be seated and waiting for class to start, at least 5 minutes before the lesson. (They should not be walking around at the beginning of the class, trying to find a place for the lesson, as that takes away time from the lesson.)

  • They should have their music book or sheet music, homework, pencil, notebook, blank paper, water, their notes that I had them write out during previous classes and an additional device to play the karaoke music that is not on the same device they are using for Skype

  • I will call them for the lesson, they won't need to call me

  • They should have headsets or headphones, available to them during the lesson

  • They should have their Musical Checklist printed out and filled out before the lesson or scan the Musical Checklist to send as an attachment in the Skype chat

    • (to scan, you just need to take a screenshot on the computer and add it to the attachments in Skype or take a picture with your phone and save it on your computer to send to Skype )

Voice lessons will encompass the entire school year and will be broken into 15 sessions for the Fall and Spring Session. Near the end of each session, you will receive a reminder that the next session will be coming up and you will be given the opportunity to opt into the next session. Opting in, means the you will be sent a confirmation email and will have to fill out a short form to confirm if you will continue or not continue. You will have 2 weeks to make your decision and your decision must be made by the lesson before the last lesson, the 14th lesson. If you do not confirm as to whether your child or children will continue, you will be charged for the next session at the last lesson of the 15 lessons session.

Practice Time

Communication and effective time management are the keys to the respectful, productive, successful use of each other's time, for all parties involved, student and teacher.

Student resources:

In order to grow and make the most out of these lesson times, there has to be a commitment on (the Student's) part to practice outside the lesson times. The Royal Corner is a resource page for the students that contains videos to show (Students) how to perform basic music techniques. You can also find your warm ups to practice with and  handouts to help with your song. (Students) should visit this page at least twice a week and review the videos until they are able to do it on their own. Music Checklists will be given during Skype lesson through Skype. For online lessons, you will have to either print out the Musical Checklist for me to take a picture, during lessons or scan it, making sure that it is filled out, to send during Skype lesson. Make sure that (Student) ALWAYS reads their Musical Checklist and follows what is written for homework. Use mirrors as you practice to make sure you are incorporating correct vowel formations, posture, and facial expressions.

Required time of practice: 30 minutes to an hour, within a week

Ways to practice song once we start singing your song (how to break up practice time):

  • 15 minutes for 4 days: a mixture of 5 minutes for warm ups and breathing exercises, 10 minutes for songs, based off of what was written in Musical Checklist

  • 10 minutes for 5 days: A few minutes of breathing, remaining time on singing with what as written in Musical Checklist

Absences/Make Up Lessons

There has to be a commitment to set aside time to make it to voice lessons, so please make sure to pick a day your child can commit to and that you know you will not have time conflicts. It is understood that life happens and may prevent you from attending a lesson and with that understanding, communication is very important and a limited amount of make up lessons/and or rescheduled lessons will be given under certain circumstances.

Online Students

  • Due to lessons being online and your child already at home, there will be  only be one make up lesson for the Fall/Spring session.

  • One make up lesson will be available for those who are taking lessons online.

    • This only applies, if you notify me via email, text, or through the contact form below at least 8 hours ahead of the lesson time. For example, if the lesson starts at 6 pm, then I should be notified by 10 am or the previous day. Advance notification is always best.

    • Make up lessons are only given if child has an extreme illness, where they are restricted to stay in bed or a life emergency, such as a family death, having to go to the hospital, involved in an accident, etc.

    • If they just have a bit of sore throat, and feel fine, they are still able to have lessons. Lessons will be adjusted to make sure they get the most out of the lesson as not every lesson, involves singing, but other aspects of music and musical preparation.

    • You will be sent a Make Up Form to choose a day and time for a make up lesson, as make up lessons are not required to be done during the week of the missed lesson.

  • Rescheduling is different from a make up lesson and you are only allowed one rescheduled lesson for the Fall/Spring session.

    • To possibly receive a rescheduled lesson, I must be notified a week or more in advance and a stated reason, that is up to my discretion.

    • You will need to fill out the form in the calendar, a week before the missed lesson or by the Saturday, a week before the Rescheduled Day, at the end of week of missed lesson. (For more information read the specific policies when your RSVP that particular day.)

    • The rescheduled lesson must be done within the week of the missed lesson.

    • Rescheduled lessons will be done on Saturdays between 10 am- 2pm.

    • If there are no available times and you have not yet missed a lesson, then you will automatically receive your one make up lesson of a discussed day and time. If you have already had a make up lesson then it will just be a missed lesson that will not be made up.
